Elvin ‘citizens’ grill mayoral candidates
On April 28th the Elvin North London Citizens team represented the school at the London Citizens mayoral assembly as part of 6000 Londoners from schools, faith groups and trade unions at the copper box in the Olympic Park. The purpose of the assembly was to ask the two leading mayoral candidates (Zac Goldsmith and Sadiq Khan) to support London Citizens' plans for housing and other priorities for the city.
The winning candidate, Sadiq Khan, agreed to nearly all our requests, including promising to build many new affordable homes and to make housing cheaper by creating more community land trusts. Our Citizens team has been working hard to find out what issues are important to the Elvin community so it was great for us to see how powerful we can be as part of a broad and diverse movement.
Our Elvin Citizens team will now start to campaign on issues that affect us in Wembley and Brent.
Pupils from Elvin have further been involved in making our community safer by traveling to the Houses of Parliament to participate in Dawn Butler MP's forum on street safety with government ministers. It was great to see our pupils once again go to Parliament to engage with politicians, showing they really know how to live our motto Magna Aude as well as our value of Community.
