Elvin Celebrates Black History Month across the whole school with a variety of activities, teaching resources, food & special guests

Elvin celebrated Black History Month throughout the school with a variety of activities, teaching resources, food & special guests to encourage learning about Black Culture.

This year our mission is to further educate and inspire all our students about the wide impact Black culture has been on a worldwide scale for many centuries now. Black History themes were incorporated within class lessons. Each year group watched a video montage of interviews with staff & pupils from BAME communities; sharing why this occasion is important to them & who are their favourite writers, scientists, actors and much more.

We encourage students to take the opportunity to read books from our Library resources, with a fantastic reading list focusing on Black History & Literature.

There is an Interactive exhibit setup where pupils are asked to explore and find answers to questions given on a worksheet. Merits are awarded to those who complete this challenge.

Our teachers participated in the Pop up Peotry in the courtyard. Performed below, by Ms Noronha.

A Black History Month Lunch Menu was available last week, which included main dishes such as Jerk Chicken, Jollof rice & Plantain.

Teaching staff kindly offered to help serve the selection of African and Caribbean dishes and had a Bring & Share in the staffroom to taste different food.

In our school courtyard three of our students performed a Steel Pan musical piece to set a warm atmosphere during lunchtime.

Three Spoken Word artists visited in the afternoon to lead two workshops showcasing cultural musical instruments & formed four performing groups to create meaningful poetry, songs & dances they are passionate about.

The Spoken Word artists performed individual poetry on topics close to them before training and encouraging pupils to express themselves through spoken word.
