The Raheem Sterling Foundation launched at Ark Elvin Academy
Wednesday 17 November 2021
On Tuesday 15th November, we proudly hosted the highly anticipated launch of the Raheem Sterling Foundation. This was a great day for the local community to see the work that is about to happen in support of Raheem's team and family.
In the morning three members of staff and 30 pupils completed the Power 7 Wembley walk with Raheem, then back to the school to complete the tour. The Raheem Sterling Foundation will focus its work on supporting young people in London, Manchester and Kingston, Jamaica, his birthplace.
At the launch event, Raheem spoke at a school assembly and paid tribute to the mentors who had helped him make the journey from Wembley schoolboy to international sports star. He said: “My journey has been well documented but nothing would have been achievable without belief, family, great mentors and the opportunities I have embraced. My Foundation is built on my experiences, success and the many challenges I overcame. I now want to help young people achieve and be the best they can be.”
Commenting on the school today compared to his youth, Raheem said: “I would have loved it. It’s a great school and I am so impressed by the strong relationship between teachers and students. I think I would have benefited from it!”
We surprised the school during the whole school assembly for his arrival and selected 30 Elvin students to ask Raheem, his mother and first football coach questions about the Foundation, his motivation and experiences.
We had two special unveilings, with the first being the Foundation plaque placed in the heart of the school building. The second was the naming of our sports hall now called The Raheem Sports Hall which was a pleasant surprise.
In our sixth form base room the pupils asked further questions about his career. And, before the press conference they were very grateful to have selfies with the star from Brent.
