Students enjoy interactive performances from the Young Shakespeare Company

On Tuesday 22nd February, students in Year 9 and Year 11 enjoyed interactive performances from the Young Shakespeare Company.

In the morning, Year 11 students saw ‘Macbeth’, a play they are studying for their GCSE English Literature brought to life. Before the performance, students were given the chance to have directorial input into the play, suggesting different styles for the actors to try out in key scenes. Following this, with just a few props and changes of costume, the actors performed the famous tragedy.

In the afternoon, Year 9 students were treated to an interactive workshop performance of ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Students were already familiar with the play, having studied it in the first half of the Spring term, so again it was a fantastic opportunity for them to see Shakespeare’s words being performed. The actors performed key scenes from the play (including the infamous balcony scene!) and students were able to have input into how the actors should play the characters. Four students in 9 Hayden-Baptiste even had lines to read!

The day was a brilliant opportunity for students to see how a modern theatre company could interpret two of Shakespeare’s most famous plays that were written over 400 years ago!
