Congratulations to Halema in year 11, who received a Young Leader of the Year award in recognition of her work with the London Football Journeys charity. Halema writes:

“As an ambassador I represent LFJ and what we do to the community to help young people from different communities break down negative perceptions of other areas. In my opinion I believe that people must look out for one another and be very thankful what they have and achieved.

There are many people in this world who suffer from everyday battles of division between communities and society. My job is to bring people together and make a difference in their lives.

It was a real honour to receive the young leader of the year trophy from my charity and Rachel Yankey, one of England’s most capped football players. To be named a young leader of the year really does motivate me even more to really keep doing what I love to do and to bring peace in areas,

Being an ambassador for LFJ has helped me to develop leadership skills such as organisation, communication and teamwork, as well as helping to build confidence and self-esteem and take on the responsibility of leading other peers and young people. I believe that there is no royal road to anything: one thing at a time, all things in succession. We should never forget that we are a citizen of this world, and there are things we can do to lift the human spirit. I think the secret to change people’s perceptions is to just focus all your energy, not on fighting the old but on building the new.
