Congratulations - great results for our year 13 and year 12 pupils!
Ark Elvin Academy is celebrating a strong set of A level results, as the number of students achieving the top grades increased again this year. The number of students achieving at least three A*-B grades - - the grades needed to get into the country’s top universities - increased by 7% this year.
So far our pupils have secured degree places at the following universities: Imperial College, King's College, University College London, Brunel, South Bank, Queen Mary, Hertfordshire and Portsmouth, to mention just a few!
Olufunke achieved three As in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. She is going to Imperial College to study medicine. She has been awarded a bursary to help her with her studies.
“I live with my parents and two little sisters and one little brother. I also have an older sister and an older brother. My parents haven’t been to university.
“I was never sure what I wanted to do but once I started science I knew I wanted to do something with it. I’d done some volunteer work where I was helping people so I knew that was definitely what I wanted to do.
“I get really tired and bored when I’m not doing something active! So I had the thought of combining helping people with science and now I am off to study medicine at Imperial.
“Last year I was head girl. I was also involved in many other things like being a student librarian, reading groups and book clubs. My bursary is really making a difference, because last year I used to have a job and trying to balance being head girl, being a librarian and also working the weekends is really, really difficult. And I don’t want to go into medicine having to do that, so it’s just really, really helpful.”
Daniel moved from Hungary five years ago with no English and today secured a place to study Computer Science at King’s College London. He will be the first in his family to go to university.
“I got an A* and two Bs today. I’ve worked with computers since I was 10, so I just want to learn more about them and do some programming, and work in IT in the future as a software developer. Maths was my main focus for revision because it’s needed for computer science the most. I did a lot of past papers, and I also did external papers, not exam papers.
“I came to this country five years ago when my family moved for work and I didn’t speak any English, so I feel like I’ve achieved a lot since then. The first few years were quite hard. My family is really happy that I’m going to be the first one to go to university.”
Principal Rebecca Curtis said, “It is fantastic to see students’ and teachers’ hard work, focus and tenacity pay off on results day and we wish all our year 13’s the very best in their exciting next steps. We are so pleased to see our pupils going off to such an impressive range of universities and we are already looking forward to welcoming them back to Ark Elvin to work with our younger pupils and encourage the next generation to work hard and apply to great universities.”
