Performing Arts Intent
We are an inclusive and vibrant department where every pupil can access, enjoy, and success in the arts. Through a rich, culturally broad curriculum in Music and Drama, we build confidence, develop oracy, and nurture curiosity and creativity.
Our classrooms are safe spaces where pupils feel free to perform, express and explore. The Performing Arts are at the heart of our school, celebrated for being one of the most inclusive and successful faculties – with every pupil given the chance to shine both in and out of the classroom through our curriculum, enrichment and support in external Arts opportunities. We want our pupils to know and understand that our subjects provide many transferable skills which can be an aid in any career they choose to go into in the future as well as championing and supporting any pupil who chooses the Performing Arts for their future.
We advocate the arts as a vital part of our school community –empowering every pupil to find their voice, share their story and shine.
We're proud to offer a range of performing arts activities including:
- Instrument lessons for all pupils
- Enrichment clubs including ballet, big band, choir and steel pan band
- Open music studio and practice rooms for GCSE and above
- Opportunities to perform in the community at events such as festivals and celebrations
- Whole school concerts and performances
We also benefit from being part of the Ark Schools Network and their excellent network-wide music programme. Designed to foster a life-long love of music, the Ark Music Programme offers a wealth of experience for all pupils at all levels, including an annual Music Gala where pupils have the opportunity to perform at a national level.
Instrumental Lessons
Learning to play an instrument is a very rewarding process and studies have shown how those who do may have increased cognitive abilities and improved mental health. On top of this it opens new avenues for creativity and social interaction, as well as the satisfaction of developing a unique skill.
The instrumental programme at Elvin offers students the opportunity to learn to play an instrument from a professional musician, who visits the school once a week. The lessons typically take place during school time, with some lessons also taking place at lunch time and after school.
There is an option for an individual lesson (£18 per lesson) or a shared lesson (£9 per lesson).
We currently offer lessons for the following instruments:
