Why do we learn maths?
Mathematics provides a framework for understanding and interpreting the world around us. We strongly believe in the power of mathematics to enrich our students’ education and equip them with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in a constantly evolving world. It allows pupils to see beyond the surface level of data and uncover the underlying patterns and sequences that may not always be immediately apparent. This, in turn, enables them to challenge assumptions and develop a critical approach to problem-solving.

Our approach
At Ark Elvin Academy, we recognize that many of our pupils may arrive with negative perceptions of mathematics. To challenge these perceptions, we highlight the practical utility and exciting possibilities of the subject and ensure that our pupils experience immediate success.
Our Year 7 curriculum is designed to revisit prior knowledge, as we understand that our pupils join us from a variety of contexts and may have different levels of proficiency in the subject. This approach allows our pupils to make rapid progress and build a strong foundation for future learning. Additionally, our curriculum is specifically designed to support retention and revisit topics covered early on in primary school, helping our pupils to consolidate their understanding and build upon prior learning.
For students with English as an Additional Language (EAL), we understand that success in mathematics can be particularly motivating. We, therefore, use accessible problems that gradually build towards more complex worded problems, incorporating reading skills as part of our whole-school approach. This allows pupils with EAL to develop their knowledge and ability in the subject while also enhancing their language skills.
Assessment in mathematics at our school is cumulative, allowing us to identify any gaps in knowledge and understanding across and within year groups. This approach helps us tailor our teaching to the specific needs of our pupils, providing them with the support and challenge they need to reach their full potential.
