Why do we learn sociology?
‘Sociology is to reveal that which is hidden’ (Bourdieu). To build a world which is tolerant, equal, and just, we must learn to identify intolerance, inequality and injustice. The sociology curriculum at Ark Elvin Academy aims to encourage students to be curious about the world and seek to unpack the way institutions are structured and the impact these structures can have on their lives and communities they are part of. We believe that sociology offers our students a way to critically engage with the world around them and enter the world as insightful thinkers who want to challenge and assess the exstrucutres within society.

Our approach
The sociology curriculum is built around three core concepts that helps students to understand the subject, and how to confidently apply their knowledge. 1. Students have access to academically rigorous texts that allows them to not only broaden their sociological terminology but allows them a breadth of understanding on the most relevant theories and knowledge 2. Students gain a deeper understanding of the subject through their study of case studies and sociologists, so that they may better understand how theories have been constructed and how they might go about forming their own theories 3. Creating opportunities and space for students to discuss, debate and interact with theories so that they may develop a more confident persona that will allow them to explain, challenge and change the existing ideas within society.
