Why do we learn PSHE?
PSHE is a subject that gives our students the safe space and freedom to develop the skills and knowledge they need to thrive now and in the future. We want to empower our students to be confident in themselves, have the opportunities to develop what it means to be an upstanding member of society and develop a cultural awareness of the world they live in. Our curriculum teaches our students to be self-aware in knowing what happy and healthy feels and looks like – PSHE is where this happens and a great curriculum with high quality teaching helps our pupils to foster lifelong aspirations, goals and values to take forward with them in the outside world.

Our approach
At Ark Elvin, our curriculum is designed to inspire, encourage discovery, challenge and equip students with knowledge and a range of skills.
PSHE Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, both now and in the future. PSHE is taught in one 55 minute lesson per week in KS3 and one to two form time sessions per week in KS4 and 5. The curriculum is split into 3 big themes, Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. These modules are worked through each term. The topics build cumulatively across year groups, returning to and building on prior learning.
PSHE education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with the skills they will need throughout later life. These skills and attributes help to teach students how to communicate effectively, enabling them to go on to build long-lasting and healthy social and professional relationships. We aim for pupils to develop the independence, the empathy, the understanding and the acceptance to treat those around them with kindness.
Through PSHE, pupils are taught the knowledge they need to be successful in their future studies and careers. The focus on raising aspirations allows pupils to consider the range of careers and choices available to them, as well as focusing on the practical actions they need to take to achieve these aspirations.
Pupils are actively taught how to revise across the five years, building up habits that will contribute to success in their studies. The character strengths that pupils are taught support and work alongside the techniques they learn.
We recognise the important role that PSHE has to play in giving our pupils the time and space to reflect on and share their experiences. Our students will also develop a rich and worldly vocabulary as they learn and discuss new topics, this will ultimately help to support their progress throughout this subject and others.
